Origin and meaning
Over time, coats increasingly became to be regarded as something precious to be preserved through the years, and to purchase one was an event involving entire families. Moreover, they soon became a means to enhance both the masculine and the feminine figure, a symbol of exclusive elegance.
The image of the “paletot” has not taken on only a formal and refined nuance, though. It represents a covering which protects the person who wears it from a sometimes hostile environment, and it acts as a shield in defending from the outside world. Many, if not all of us, experienced the need to keep this garment on in displeasing or uncomfortable places.
50s and 60s
During the ʼ50s and ʼ60s, coats become a quintessential icon of elegance: all the key figures of the exciting “Dolce Vita” years, of the cinema, and of rock and roll—from Mastroianni to Jean-Paul Belmondo, from Paul Newman to Marlon Brando, from Steve McQueen to Robert De Niro, from Mick Jagger to John Lennon—wore one in the most important moments of their careers.
